BOB – The Adventures of Bobby Ray (Album Review)
B.O.B. – The Adventures of Bobby Ray
(Release Date: April 27, 2010)
Grand Hustle, Rebel Rock, Atlantic
B.O.B. joins the esteemed class of rappers, singers, and all around entertainers who through no fault of their own just sound like somebody else. two years ago a pasty white kid named Asher Roth was going to be the new Eminem until he opened his mouth and everybody said he sounds just like Eminem and the dream was crushed(ish). B.O.B. isn’t just another rapper with casual vocal inflections of his dirty south doppelganger he is actually from the same area so that doesn’t help either.
If you don’t know by now I’m talking about Andre 3000 well actually after listening to this album he sounds like Big Boi as well so if you like the Outkast lite sound but just wished it was less filling then look no further I kid I kid.
B.O.B. has some really big and I mean Bombs over Bagdad big shoes to fill in Andre’s absence from public life and he sorta succeeds and sorta doesn’t.
The album is kind of trippy actually because he has some pretty straight forward pop songs here that Pink or i don’t know insert boy band here could have done and not skipped a beat. I actually didn’t know what to expect before I heard his first few singles which sort of changed my attitude about him as a artist and performer. There is no other way to say it so I’ll just come out with it, B.O.B. kind of won me over especially when I heard Lupe Fiasco’s versions of the same two singles. But and this is the rub here, both Lupe and B.O.B. got swallowed up by the tracks and couldn’t stake their mark on it. I dare you to recite a lyric from Airplanes or Nothin’ on You, you can’t because the people on the hooks snatched the songs from him. It is so bad I almost forgot whose song it was, he had two verses but it felt like he was the feature.
I don’t think it was his inability to shine so much as it is difficult to sprinkle your own spices on something that already came prepackaged hooks, beat, chorus, theme all done before he even got to the studio. The chances of you getting noticed with your sparkler in the middle of a fireworks show is little to nil.
The album is short on the 12 songs side which isn’t a bad thing because I like when artist get to the point, put the best songs you got on here no fillers no waste makers, no garbage. This usually works when a artist gives you 12 bangers on a 12 song album, BOB provided closer to 2.5 which is still a good… oh who am I kidding. I’m being a bit harsh, there are a few decent songs here which is nice instead of the cookie cutters but not enough. The just add water pop songs where head and shoulders above the rest of the album and that made things a little disjointed for me but I digress. I can’t say for certain that B.O.B. will still keep his spot if Andre 3000 ever felt like making music again but all that talk about him biting Andre should sto… lol. B.O.B. really and I mean REALLY sounds like him for some people its gonna be annoying and for others they won’t even notice, I noticed.
$$1/2 out of $$$$$
