I hate to do this I like Fabolous, but this album is hard to listen to. I think the fact that I like his music makes me like this album even less. I don’t know what went wrong maybe all the A&Rs were asleep or worse laid off. Whatever the case I’ll just start with this, Fab you are better than this. Biggest sticking point to me were the beats. Production on this album was second rate mixtape-y if you will.
I guess no album (lately) would be complete without the seeming statutory TI influenced (and I’m being generous here) hook/song. You first heard it on TI’s “Live Your Life”, then Maino did it on “All the Above” and now its Fab’s turn literally. I’m trying not to be cynical but these things are way too common place for them to be a accident.
Rappers for the love of all things good and wholesome stop taking wack beats from Ryan Leslie, the guy is talented but he doesn’t know how to make a good rap song if it walked up and pimp slapped him during his staged you tube videos. Three chords is all he is going to give you, no drums, no base, no mix, just three chords. Ryan you seem like a good dude but real talk you are not good at this rap stuff… and Dream… really? come on dude really? Throw it in the bag? that sounds awful like “You can have what ever you like”, but worse how they achieved this seemingly impossible feat is impressive but in a bad way.
Ok enough of the doom and gloom stand out songs “Money goes” featuring Jay Z on the hook, I liked the feel and flow of this song, and the album would have been better off if it had more songs that allowed Fab to breathe instead of being boxed in to a “sound”. I also started to feel “Pachanga” on second and third listen. I think I’ve discovered the fatal flaw, Fab needs a musical track not that synth down south stuff. All of his best work were either on samples or songs that were open to let him spit and these types of songs were few and far between.
Fab I’m a fan, this isn’t to crap on you as a artist this is just one fan saying what’s on my mind, I’m in a good mood so I’m gonna let this one pass we’ll pretend like it never happened, but don’t you ever make another album like this again. Do yourself a favor and musically stay in New York.
Is it worth a listen? Sure, Fab is a beast and frankly I’ll never tell anybody not to buy it but I wasn’t feeling it.
