What I want to know is who lit this fire under Jay Z and Snoop Dogg? Is it the recession, is it the weather, who knows but whatever it is I really freaking hope its contagious like a ear born Ebola or something. Truthfully I really didn’t know what to expect when I pressed play, I liked spurts of the last album but thought it was a colossal shoulder shrug to me. It felt like Big Snoop Dogg was just cutting a check. If you’ve been a fan like I have ever since 187 then let me reassure you this album will remind you what you liked about DoggyStyle. Let me be also clear here THIS IS NOT DOGGY STYLE 2, not even close but Snoop is flowing again like it’s 92 and Dr Dre is bout to sign him.
I wouldn’t call it urgency, maybe energy is a better word for it but it is severely lacking in the game right now. After last album’s country song Snoop headed left to the warm embrace of the West Coast, and I’m glad he did. Musically there are things I liked about this album and things I probably would have left on the cutting room floor. I don’t hold punches or cut corners even for people I like so here goes, Snoop why… hold on WHY did you release that Gangsta Luv with the Dream???? I like Dream in his own right but not here the whole thing just didn’t feel right. And the Pronto song with Soulja Boy???? I can’t endorse that autotune train wreck in good conscience. Aside from those to missteps (in my eyes) everything else either grew on me or is fire, you know the good ol fashion fire that makes you bob your head and tap your toe in a B-Boy stance. I really liked 2 Minute Warning, 1800, Thats tha Homie and Pimpin Ain’t EZ produced by Terrace Martin, Lil Jon, Danja / Timbaland, and Nottz respectively.
Overall it brought me back, to the place where people actually were trying to make music, some stuff worked, some didn’t but I can tell when somebody is phoning in their verse and when somebody put effort into making a album. at 12 songs and 2 interludes its a brisk listen, I believe you can finish from end to end in under 50 minutes. If you happen to be right now riding a Lac Fleet or Coupe DeVille rolling on dubs whoopty whoop ni… ohh wait thats Dre’s verse… whatever you know what I mean. Listen this album bumps just right, and even if the Doc didn’t order it I think you should take some of this and call me in the morning.
$$$1/2 out of $$$$$
