I wasn’t sure how I wanted to approach this album review, crew records usually suck, I mean AWFUL. For the most part it’s usually a situation like Michael Jordan running down the lane with the janitor, the ball boy, and some guy from the concessions stand. I don’t think I can stress this enough but crew
records usually suck. I don’t enjoy them and I never listen to them again. The one lone exception to the rule was of course G Unit (well the first one at least). So here we have Officer Rick Ross fresh off his battle with 50 Cent and it seems they are competing in another arena as well.
My thoughts you ask? hmmm well one of the problems of down south records is the reliance on 808 drums and similar sounds in every song. The bright spots to this record was the change of pace. Although I did like Go featuring Birdman and Throw it in the Sky. The rest of the songs were average to forgettable until the production made a change of pace to Rich Harrison and Bink! then the numbness subsided and we got back to music having feeling again. By far hands down Bink! had the best record on the album I don’t think it was so much the production but emotions from the actual beat. Lyrically what can be said about a guy who took the name of the largest drug trafficker LA has ever seen. One day Ross is going to widen his rap vocabulary and when that day comes other rappers should be very nervous there are skills somewhere buried behind the blow references.
As for the rest of the Carol City Cartel, Gunplay, Torch, and Young Breed have a way to go until they can carry a album on their own individually. Its not quite Michael Jordan and three other guys from a bus stop, but its not the All Star Game either. The lack of ability to distinguish themselves from each other and the pack is hurting them more than Ross. I thought the album was average, and the production was a let down after his last album was so musical. There may be a chance I will come back to listen to a few songs again as will you, but this wasn’t a mind blowing experience. If there is a next time they have to add more diversity into the song selection.
